About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn at 818 Franklin Ave, Agi's Counter is a standout Eastern European and Hungarian restaurant that effortlessly blends tradition with contemporary flair. This cozy neighborhood gem offers a vibrant culinary journey through Eastern Europe’s rich flavors, expertly crafted for today’s discerning palate.

Whether you're dropping in for a comforting brunch or a full dinner experience, Agi's Counter captivates your senses with meticulously prepared dishes that are both familiar and refreshingly inventive.

The menu is a true testament to Hungarian comfort food elevated with creative twists. Their Tuna Melt, a must-try standout, features confit tuna paired with pickled peppers, crisp celery, dill, and Alpine cheddar, harmonized perfectly by a tangy Savoy cabbage slaw. Many guests have deemed it the best tuna melt they've ever tasted—a savory, melty delight with a bright, acidic kick that dances on the palate.

The Caraway Caesar salad is another local favourite—radicchio leaves dressed in a luscious caraway Caesar dressing, topped with potato Pullman crumbs and nutty Grana Padano cheese. It’s a refreshing, bold take on a classic, boasting a complex medley of tart and creamy elements that elevate each bite. For those drawn to unique and satisfying brunch options, dishes like the caramelized Half Grapefruit with vanilla bean, sugar Pullman toast, and salted yogurt add an unexpected but delightful citrusy-sweet contrast.

Baked goods at Agi's Counter deserve a spotlight as well. The New York-style Cheesecake, served with a vibrant blueberry coriander compote, strikes a perfect balance of rich, dense, and tangy. Meanwhile, the Spanikopita Babka swirled with spinach, feta, ricotta, and garlic, garnished with toasted sesame seeds, offers an irresistibly flaky and savory pastry experience. Don't miss the rye chocolate chip cookie, a surprisingly complex treat that patrons rave about for its unique flavor and satisfying texture.

Dinner selections continue to impress with comforting dishes such as the Chicken Schnitzel, paired beautifully with lesco romesco, shmaltz aioli, and cool buttermilk ranch cucumbers, capturing the essence of homestyle Hungarian cooking balanced with modern sophistication. The menu also features creative shared plates like Dip & Chips, featuring beets, caramelized onion sour cream, egg jam, dill, chives, and smoked trout roe—a harmonious blend of earthy, smoky, and tangy flavors that offers a delightful twist to familiar dips and crisps.

The drinks list complements the food wonderfully; unique offerings like the Coffee Egg Cream Fizz and classic cappuccinos or macchiatos provide a comforting finish or a spirited start to your meal.

Guests repeatedly praise Agi's Counter for its impeccable service and welcoming staff, including owner Jordan, who adds a personal, heartfelt touch to the experience. The team’s attentiveness and willingness to accommodate dietary needs further enhance the inviting, neighborhood feel that makes this spot a true Brooklyn gem.

Had a delicious brunch here! We got the tuna melt (obviously), deviled eggs, pumpkin soup, spanakopita babka, and the caraway Caesar. All dishes were phenomenal and delicious. Staff was very friendly and Jordan the owner is lovely. The caraway chocolate chip cookie is also 10/10. Can’t wait to come back here!

A great neighborhood spot. Service was LOVELY!! Interior was comfy and homey. I came because I heard there was a good tuna melt here. And while I would not call myself a tuna melt expert, I do love a tuna melt. I am not joking when I say this was the best tuna melt I've ever had. The tuna - excellent; the mustard, pickles, slaw and peppers on the side added the perfect bute and acid; and that bread...it made the sandwich. Really so delicious. It was a cold day so I also had the nokedli soup. Filled with little dumplings and loads of chicken (and a little more celery that I like, but...), it was hearty and delicious. The obscene amount of dill tipped it from being good to being a memorably drlicious bowl. I will be back often for that tuna melt or the soup. Maybe both at the same time.

Always a beautiful, satisfying meal! Caraway Caesar is one of the best Caesar salads I’ve had and I always go back for it. They’re very accommodating for my dietary restrictions, staff is so lovely, welcoming, and friendly. And of course the interior is absolutely stunning!Truly one of NYC’s gems.

Small local eatery in Brooklyn. Intimate atmosphere with the dim lighting and limited seating. Recommend that you make a reservation. Really friendly staff that is knowledgeable about the menu. Food and wine were both delicious. I ordered the dinner special, the wild boar with berry reduction sauce. The wassermann franc red wine paired well with the main. To share, we had the summer squash. And my friend ordered the confit tuna melt. Very delicious and nicely toasted on the bread. A bit pricey of a dinner for two, but definitely a worthwhile experience.

Excellent Hungarian food! House smoked salmon was heavenly. Caraway Cesar is something else - tart and creamy radicchio. Sandwich of the day was pastrami and beef tongue… Tuna melt was fine. Caraway chocolate cookie is something you’ve never tasted or imagined before - we loved it. And a beet Bloody Mary - mama!!! Will be back.

This place was friendly, warm, and just plain fun. My girlfriend and I came here for our 2 year anniversary brunch/lunch and left giddy. Every dish or snack was delicious and vibrant. This place has the best tuna melt I’ve ever had by orders of magnitude. The country club plate was a personal favorite because I love to nosh. The general profiles of most things were similar across the board (funky, salty, sour, fishy) but everything had its own distinct flavor and never got boring. The service was attentive and friendly but not overbearing, and everything came out incredibly fast.

Very delicious brunch really enjoyed everything we ordered. Nothing was a letdown excellent deviled eggs, super creamy and decadent. The tuna melt was very enjoyable as where the crêpes. Bummed out the cheesecake was gone already but we will just have to go back. Service was super friendly.

Came here for Sunday brunch and loved it. Sunday hours run 10am–3pm, and it's been on my list forever because of the Michelin guide recommendation and so many awards that this restaurants has gotten. I came as a walk-in and waited about an hour. Reservations are definitely recommended on weekends, but the wait wasn’t too bad — I took a quick trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden right next door, which worked out perfectly. Their reservation system texts you when your table is ready What I ordered: • Fánk (Hungarian donut) — Sunday-only and goes fast. Light, soft, slightly sweet, and seasonal. Kind of reminds me of a challah texture • Sandwich special — mine was a pastrami beef tongue reuben; big flavor, generous portion. I love the mustard it came with • Tuna melt — griddled pullman bread, melty alpine cheddar, plus slaw and mustard. Super comforting. This is their signature, I liked it but I loved the pastrami more • Nokedli soup — tear-dropped dumplings in chicken broth; this was a bit oily so not sure I'd get this one again. Charming space, friendly team, and well-made comfort food. but Wait can be long but great spot for a relaxing Sunday brunch. For more NYC food recs, I’m on IG: @alice.likes.food
